The first session of the BBioNets Cross-Fertilisation Meetings – Round 2, held on 11 December 2025, initiated a series of six (6) meetings focused on Bio-Based Practices on Farms and Forests. These meetings function as essential forums for the cross-exchange of information, bringing together expertise and diverse perspectives from the project’s Forest and Agriculture Networks – FANs (based in Ireland, Greece, Spain, Italy, Poland, and the Czech Republic) and the partners’ wider European network. The core objective of the series is to facilitate knowledge transfer and dialogue to drive the adoption of sustainable bio-based technologies in the agricultural and forestry sectors.

This inaugural meeting, titled “Innovations in Nutrient Recovery,” specifically addressed the critical transition from synthetic inputs to efficient, bio-based alternatives in farming. Researchers, academic experts, and industry leaders presented cutting-edge solutions for recovering and reusing valuable nutrients from waste streams. The emphasis was placed on practical application and environmental sustainability, ensuring the innovations are scientifically sound and economically viable for agricultural and forestry professionals across Europe. The event was organised primarily by FOCUS STC, with contributions from all project partners, and included a panel session moderated by the American Farm School (AFS).

The meeting’s agenda included a wide spectrum of highly relevant nutrient recovery topics, highlighting innovative techniques with significant benefits for soil health and reduced environmental impact:

Displacement of Synthetic Fertilisers: Daniel Coonan (TEAGASC, Ireland) presented research on the “effect of displacing nutrients with bio-based fertilisers in cropping systems,” detailing performance in real-world agricultural settings.Download the presentation
Biochar and Livestock: Apostolos Malamakis (Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, Greece) discussed “Integrating Biochar in Swine Feed” as a sustainable approach to enhancing livestock production and environmental management.Download the presentation
Circular Economy Solutions: Luca Brenna (Tersan Puglia, Italy) showcased how “Short Value Chains” are effectively turning circular by-products into biofertilizers, providing a blueprint for regional resource management.Download the presentation
Field Experiment Results: Damian Wach (Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation, Poland) offered crucial data from “Field experiments with recycled nutrient fertilizers (RNFs) conducted in Baltic Sea countries,” providing regional validation of these technologies.Contact the expert
Biochar for Soil Health: Gabriel Beltrán Maza (Venta del Llano Centre, Spain) detailed the “Use of biochar and its principal benefits for soil health.”Download the presentation
