Summary
This article highlights the urgent need for Greece to adopt a circular economy model to maximize resource efficiency, reduce waste, and align with global sustainability goals. Greece’s rich natural resources, skilled workforce, and technical traditions provide a strong foundation for this transition, particularly benefiting its primary sector and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The National Strategy for the Circular Economy focuses on sustainable resource management, circular entrepreneurship, and sustainable consumption. While regions like Central Macedonia and Crete lead with initiatives in bioeconomy and circular practices, challenges such as fragmented regulatory frameworks and limited public awareness hinder progress. Emerging value chains, such as biofuels, organic nutrients, and high-value products from agricultural waste, offer economic and environmental opportunities. Effective implementation of national and regional strategies is essential to fully leverage the benefits of circular and bioeconomic models, paving the way for a sustainable and competitive future for Greece.
