Bioeconomy Ireland Week 2024

Bioeconomy Ireland Week

15th October 2024

As part of Bioeconomy Ireland Week 2024, BBioNets hosted on 15th October a webinar aiming to bring attention to the growing role of the bioeconomy in Ireland’s sustainable development. Organised by project partners MTU and Teagasc, the online event featured contributions from thought leaders, industry experts, and advocates deeply involved in EIP-AGRI initiatives and key national and international bioeconomy projects. These were James Gaffey, from the Irish EIP-AGRI Operational Group, Colm Faulkner from the Irish-funded NXTGENWOOD project, Dragica Grozdanic from the MainstreamBio project and Noha Mahmoud from the ShapingBio project. The webinar focused on the transformative potential of biomass resources, highlighting their ability to drive both environmental sustainability and economic growth.

In recent years, Ireland has emerged as a key player in the bioeconomy, with ongoing efforts to harness renewable biological resources for various sectors, including energy, agriculture, and industrial processes. The panel discussion amongst the guest speakers delved into the importance of primary producers, what role they will play in driving bio-based solutions to Ireland, what are some incentives or support systems to support and next big opportunities for primary producers in bioeconomy innovation.

The webinar contributed significantly to the dialogue on how Ireland can strengthen its leadership in sustainable bioeconomic development, benefitting primary producers while also positioning the country as one of the key leaders of the bioeconomy in the region.

With the increasing global emphasis on sustainability and the ongoing national efforts to develop bioeconomy opportunities in Ireland, this event tried to shed light on how Ireland can leverage its natural resources and technological advancements to create a thriving, sustainable bioeconomy.
